Pulver-Shaffer Scholarship
The Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) selects outstanding students doing an internship, project, or study (hereafter, “project”) in the area of Community Development for the Pulver-Shaffer Scholarship. Recipients receive $3,000/year and may receive the scholarship a maximum of two (2) years.
The student must be a current student at any undergraduate level. Eligible students must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Candidates with a declared major in Agricultural & Applied Economics or Agricultural Business Management, or accepted into the CALS Certificate in Business Management for Agricultural & Life Sciences are preferred. Project proposals must be in the area of community development, defined as the process of working to address community-level issues to improve quality of life and economic opportunities. Awards may be given for a project that is ongoing, or occurred within the past 12 months, or planned to occur within the next 12 months. Award payment will be handled within the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. This award is made in honor of Glen Pulver and Ron Shaffer. Glen Pulver was a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1955-1990 He was instrumental in developing community economics as a field of study. In addition to producing a rich line of research and outreach on the topic, he was a founding member, director and president of the Community Development Society of America, and a frequent advisor and speaker on community economics. Ron Shaffer also a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics from 1972 to 2001, was a peer and colleague of Glen Pulver in advancing the field of community economics. He was a pioneer of the Community Economic Analysis process used around the world today, and the Community Economic Preparedness Index measuring tool for communities.
Eligibility Criteria
This scholarship will support Undergraduate students in CALS with a GPA of at least 3.0. A declared major in Agricultural & Applied Economics or Agricultural Business Management, or accepted into the CALS Certificate in Business Management for Agricultural & Life Sciences is preferred.

This is a permanent waiver, revocable only upon written permission of the recommendation writer.
