Charles H. Holbrow Memorial Scholarship

The Charles H. Holbrow Memorial Scholarship provides a one-time award to an undergraduate student from the College of Letters & Science demonstrating an interest in the interdisciplinary relationship between the arts and sciences.

Recipients are evaluated using donor criteria and College of Letters & Science criteria (academic excellence, community service, leadership, diversity, strength of character, and creative accomplishment). Students who are not current recipients of Letters & Science multi-year scholarships are given priority. Students must be in and maintain good standing and full-time enrollment in the College of Letters & Science.

This fund was established by Ms. Martha Sandler in memory of her father, Professor Charles “Charlie” H. Holbrow. In 1955, he earned his BA in history from UW-Madison and a MA in history from Columbia’s Russian Institute. Subsequently in 1963, he completed his PhD in nuclear physics from UW-Madison, finding inspiration from the dawning of the space age. Professor Holbrow had an appetite for learning and making connections with others, teaching others in new and creative ways throughout his life and career.
