Linguistics Opportunity Award
The Language Sciences program awards the Linguistics Opportunity Award annually to recognize the accomplishments of students majoring in Linguistics.
Students must be sophomores or juniors majoring in Linguistics who will be enrolled in the upcoming Fall semester, and who have taken at least two Linguistics courses.
Successful applicants should have evidence of academic excellence in linguistic coursework, involvement in a project such as research or volunteer work/community service related to language, a strong recommendation, and a well-written essay.
The award is funded by generous donations from alumni and others to the Linguistics Fund.
Student financial aid packages can be impacted by scholarship awards. It is recommended that students contact the financial aid office to learn about impact on current aid packages.

- Student essay: Describe your achievements related to linguistics in 1-2 pages (maximum 500 words). A relevant activity could include a linguistics course paper or project, research you’re involved in, linguistics-related outreach or volunteer work, or your future directions, such as your plans for graduate school or the relevance of linguistics training to your future career. We recommend choosing one activity to focus on and writing about it in detail. Your essay should address these aspects: Describe the activity and your specific contribution or involvement. What have you learned from participation in the activity? How does your experience studying linguistics impact your future directions?
- Please upload your most up-to-date unofficial transcript. If you are unsure how to do this, visit the Registrar's website for instructions on how to request your unofficial transcript.
- Enter the name and email of a professor or other mentor who has agreed to serve as a reference. (Be sure to ask them at least 2-3 weeks in advance.) The referee will be contacted and asked to fill out a brief online evaluation form (a full recommendation letter is not needed).

- I verify that I plan to enroll in the upcoming Fall semester. I understand that this scholarship will be awarded next Fall.
