Harold P. Kurtz Journalism Scholarship Fund

The Harold P. Kurtz Journalism Scholarship was established by Harold P. Kurtz, M.S. ’61, in appreciation for the education he received at the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

FAFSA required prior to awarding decisions. Preference in selection is given to journalism students who have financial need.

About the process: Students do not apply for individual scholarships with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Students fill out one application and the scholarship committee matches students to awards. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academics, study area and involvement. Donor Information
A Wisconsin native, Mr. Kurtz attended public high schools in Milwaukee and Brandon, and graduated from Platteville High School. He earned a B.A. from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, before attending UW-Madison for graduate school. Mr. Kurtz worked for the Appleton Post-Crescent for several years and spent the remainder of his career in institutional advancement. He was the Director of Public Relations for Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, and Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He later served as vice president for development for the Children’s Hospital of St. Paul, and director of development for the University of Minnesota. Mr. Kurtz is the author of 10 published books and holds several leadership roles in organizations throughout the Twin Cities. He was president of the Wright-Berglund Foundation and of his church congregation. He serves on the boards of Mounds View Public School District and Intermediate Education District 916 and is a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Harold and Grace Jahn Kurtz have two married sons and two grandchildren.
