Lawless Louis and Mathea Helen Mollere Pre-Medicine Scholarship

The Lawless L. and Mathea Helen Mollere Pre-Medicine scholarship supports an aspiring physician junior or senior with financial need pursuing a degree from the College of Letters & Science. Applicants must be second or third year students at the time of application who intend to be enrolled the following academic year. Successful candidates have an excellent academic record with evidence of progress in pre-medicine coursework and demonstration of breadth of study or experience in the liberal arts outside of the biological sciences. Only currently enrolled, U.S. citizens are considered. The donor prefers that recipients do not smoke or use alcohol or drugs.

Successful applicants should also have strong recommendations and well written essays. In addition, scholarships with a financial need component require a completed FAFSA form on file with UW-Madison. Students who are not current recipients of Letters & Science multi-year scholarships are given priority. Students must be in and maintain good standing and full-time enrollment in the College of Letters & Science.

This fund was established by the estate of Mathea Hellen Mollere to support students preparing for a career in medicine.

Apply for Letters & Science scholarships by using your campus NetID and password and clicking on the “Sign In” button on the top-right corner of this screen.

Payment is divided among the fall and spring terms following the notification of the award. Student financial aid packages can be impacted by scholarship awards. It is recommended that students contact UW’s Office of Student Financial Aid to learn about impact on current aid packages.

Supplemental Questions
  1. (L&S) I authorize the release of information contained in my student records at University of Wisconsin-Madison to the appropriate scholarship selection committee for the purpose of evaluation and scholarship award selection. This can include high school, other institution, and UW-Madison course and grade information; UW-Madison academic and non-academic actions; test scores; admissions application content and financial aid information.
  2. (Mollere) What is your expected graduation date (semester and year)? You must have Junior or Senior academic standing in the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters and be planning to enroll full-time (12 or more credits) in the 2025-2026 academic year to be eligible for this award.
  3. (Mollere/Ebling) Are you planning a career in medicine or health-related research?
  4. (L&S) Like other information content and sources, generative AI can be used to support original ideas but not used to write your essays and not presented as your own original work.
As a UW-Madison student I understand that I must adhere to UW-Madison conduct standards of honesty and integrity. Falsification is a violation of UWS Chapter 17.09(9). As such, I will properly credit the sources used in my written submission for this application.
  5. (Mollere/Ebling) Tell us why you have chosen a career in medicine? How does this career trajectory align with your academic interests and future goals? In what ways are you preparing for medical school?
  6. (Mollere/Ebling) Describe your current involvement in research. How has your involvement in research shaped your development as a student and prepared you for medical school?
  7. (Mollere) The donor of this scholarship intends to provide opportunities for recipients to explore areas of study outside the biological sciences and/or allow students to participate in enrichment programs like the arts, study abroad, conference attendance, second majors or certificate programs and other engaging experiences. These demonstrate a commitment to breadth. If you were to receive this scholarship what would it allow you to study or experience that expands your academic breadth?
  8. (Mollere/Ebling) Is there any other information the Scholarships Committee should know about you pertaining to the review and assessment of your application? This is your opportunity to tell us about any extenuating circumstances (financial or otherwise), challenges, identity and/or family experiences and history, exceptional talents or accomplishments, or other factors that are not contained in other areas of the application that may impact its review. L&S values diversity of all kinds and we welcome you to share information about communities with which you identify. Please be specific when presenting the additional information while honoring your need for privacy and discretion.
  9. (Mollere) Please provide the name and email of a recommender. Your recommender will receive an automated request from WiSH to submit their letter of recommendation directly into the system. It is best practice for you to also communicate directly with your recommender about your requested letter. The letter of recommendation is due on the same date the application closes.
  10. (Mollere/Ebling) I understand that answers to the questions below regarding employment history, service/volunteer history, student involvement & activities history, research & publications history, and awards & honors history may prepopulate from previous L&S scholarship applications if I have started an application in a past cycle.
