The Wisconsin Newspaper Association/Lester L. Hawkes Scholarship Fund provides financial support to undergraduate students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Eligibility Criteria
Only School of Journalism and Mass Communication majors are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The application to apply for this and all other School of Journalism and Mass Communication scholarships is open the first two weeks of every December. Donor Information
Lester L. Hawkes was a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he specialized in the study of community newspapers. He helped launch the careers of hundreds of journalists and served as assistant director of the school until his retirement in 1973 after 29 years of teaching.
Hawkes began his journalism career in the back shop and office of his father’s newspaper, the Sheldon Journal, in Illinois. Hawkes became editor of the paper at age 18.
The Wisconsin Press Association began awarding a scholarship in Lester Hawkes’ name in 1964.
