Rein in Sarcoma Jan Maudlin Sarcoma Scholars Fund
This scholarship is intended for medical students in the School of Medicine and Public Health with an interest in cancer and cancer education, as evidenced by completion of a summer research project (generally between the first and second year of medical school). Students will have the goal of educating and raising awareness about sarcoma cancers in the medical community and general public.
During the award period, the awardee will be informally mentored by the University’s Sarcoma Team and invited to sarcoma educational opportunities. The Sarcoma Team, in possible collaboration with other regional sarcoma medical experts, will host an annual optional educational session for the Rein in Sarcoma Jan Maudlin Sarcoma Scholars (“RIS”) that all medical students may attend, emphasizing the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal tumors. The awardee should participate in the educational session. Interested RIS will be mentored and encouraged to raise awareness about sarcoma cancer in the medical community and general public in partnership with the Rein in Sarcoma Red Flags Education Committee and will be invited to create a sarcoma related project. Each spring, a sarcoma “lunch and learn” event is encouraged to be held, with support from the Rein in Sarcoma Education Committee, featuring a patient speaker and an expert for the medical school classes. Information on the RIS and the application process shall be provided during the lunch and learn.
