Bernice D. Kuney Scholarship

The Bernice D. Kuney Scholarship was established in 1989 through a generous gift from Edith Martindale to honor her mentor, Bernice Kuney. Kuney dedicated 40 years to teaching English at UW–Extension, supporting adults returning to college for degrees or professional development. Martindale, a 1944 alumna, devoted her career to advancing understanding and support for mental illness and mental disability, themes explored in her work and writing.

This scholarship supports returning adult students who have had a significant gap in their education and are enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree program. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Gap of at least 5 years
  • Preference for student studying part-time
  • Academic progress, achievement, and commitment
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, asylee, or eligible non-citizen
