I. L. Newman Mathematics Fund

The Irma L. Newman Fund award is a one-time scholarship award for undergraduate students majoring in mathematics and who are participating in a formal for-credit MATH directed study course over the summer term. The award is open to undergraduate math majors who matriculated at UW-Madison as freshmen during (or in the summer immediately prior to) the previous academic year, are in their “second year” of studies, and are of at least sophomore standing. Multiple awards may be granted in any one year, with awards being distributed for the subsequent fall term only after successful completion of the course with a final passing grade. Previous recipients are welcome to re-apply.

The fund was established December 31, 1976 through a bequest of Irma L. Newman. Irma Newman received a BA (1926) in mathematics and MA (1936) in Education and Speech from UW-Madison and had a career teaching high school mathematics. The Fund supports research and programs of the Department of Mathematics.
