Peter Hoff - Study Abroad
The scholarship shall be awarded every year and shall be given to the student at the start of his/her study abroad program. In the event the recipient voluntarily discontinues full-time enrollment, fails to remain in good academic standing as prescribed by the University for continuation, or does not carry through with his/her plans to study abroad, s/he shall forfeit all rights of the scholarship, and the money shall revert to the Fund.
Qualifications for candidates are as follows:
o An accepted registered student at UW-Madison and maintenance of an overall academic GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
o Declared Spanish or Portuguese undergraduate major and a GPA in the target language of at least 3.25.
o Completion, or proficiency equivalent to, of at least four (4) semesters of university study of the target language and plan to study that language in a country where it is spoken.
o No previous semester or longer international study experiences at any academic level.
o Approved for a semester-long or longer study abroad program through the UW-Madison International Academic Programs office or it successor.
o A sophomore, junior, or senior (or graduate student, as noted below) at the time of application.
Candidates meeting these qualifications must submit a completed application according to University scholarship deadlines of the school year preceding that for which the scholarship will be awarded. The Donor encourages the selection committee to consider overall academic performance, a high level of achievement in foreign language as well as a demonstrated interest in foreign language use and cultural exploration. This should be evidenced by previous short-term international travel, participation in organizations and activities on campus or elsewhere, jobs or volunteerism that relate to global topics, etc. In a year when no undergraduate student qualifies, the award may be given to a graduate student in the Department that meets the qualifications.
