Que Lan Undergraduate Student Support Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Lan’s husband, David Dyer, and the Department of Entomology in honor of Que Lan’s service and memory. Lan joined the Entomology Department in 2001 and was also associated with the UW Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center. Lan’s research focused on employing the tools of molecular biology to develop novel methods of pest control. Her keen interests in lipid metabolism led to the discovery of several inhibitors that blocked cholesterol utilization. More recently, she became involved in developing naturally occurring products that control mosquitoes. This interest stemmed not only from a scientific interest but a personal interest as she contracted Malaria while a child in China. Lan, unknown to most, served as a dedicated mentor for a number of high school students as well as undergraduates who worked with her lab. She relished the opportunity to don a lab coat and work in the lab beside her students and post-docs. Beyond science, she touched many lives professionally and personally as a colleague, mentor, teacher and friend.
