Eleanor S. Hicks Scholarship

The Eleanor S. Hicks Scholarship was established by Stratton E. Hicks in honor of his wife, and is supported by their son, Harold, and daughter, Dr. Judith Stiehm. In the 1920’s, Mrs. Hicks traveled from Sterling, Kansas, to Madison in order to pursue a teaching degree at UW–Madison – a courageous move at the time and evidence of her commitment to education. She graduated in 1930 with a degree in physical education, which she taught at an elementary school in Michigan for three years before moving back to Madison. Mrs. Hicks, who passed away in 2000 at the age of 93, was an active community volunteer and strong supporter of education throughout her life.
