This incoming first year student scholarship does not require completion of a separate application, rather, students are considered after submission of the admissions application and the FAFSA. College scholarships for first year students are very scarce and limited.
The Theodore Herfurth scholarship provides a 4 year award to high achieving students with financial need pursuing a degree from the College of Letters & Science. Typically the award is $8,000 per year for 4 years. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA; be enrolled full-time; and intend to graduate with an L&S degree.
Theodore Herfurth Jr. established this scholarship to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students in the College of Letters & Science. Mr. Herfurth was a prominent Madison business and civic leader and is credited for determining the author of the famous “sifting and winnowing” phrase inscribed on Bascom Hall.
