Department of History Undergraduate Scholarships Application

The Department of History Undergraduate Scholarships Application allows students to apply for up to six History scholarships at once. By completing this application, you will be considered for the following scholarships from the Department of History:

  • The Willard L. Huson Scholarship ($500)
  • The Steven A. and Barbara S. Jaffe History Scholarship ($2,000)
  • The Orson S. Morse History Scholarship ($1,000)
  • The John Sharpless Scholarship ($1,000)
  • The Margaret E. Smith-Esther Butt History Scholarship ($1,500)
  • The Goldberg Scholarship in History ($1,000)

Scholarships range in the amount of $500 to $2,000. Your application will be considered for specific scholarships based on your answers to the questions in this application, eligibility factors, and the materials provided. For an overview of each scholarship, see the Department of History Undergraduate Scholarships, Awards, and Prizes webpage. Please note that four other History scholarships—the William K. Fitch Scholarship ($5,000), the Global Perspectives Scholarship (for study abroad), the Alice D. Mortenson Russian History Award, and the History Internship Scholarship—require separate WiSH applications for consideration.

Eligibility Criteria
Recipients of History Department scholarships must be declared in the History major. Students who will graduate in spring 2024, summer 2024, or who have already graduated are not eligible to receive scholarships. Recipients will need to enroll at UW-Madison during the 2024-2025 academic year in order to receive scholarships.

  5. Please request a letter of recommendation from someone that will speak to your deserving of a scholarship from the Department of History. Please enter the name and email address of the person who will be submitting a letter on your behalf here. They will receive instruction on how to submit the letter at the email address you provide. Your application will not be complete until the letter of recommendation has been submitted. The person recommending you should submit their letter through Wisconsin Scholarship Hub by the application deadline.
