Department of History Undergraduate Writing Prize Application

The Department of History Undergraduate Writing Prize Application allows students to apply for up to fifteen History writing prizes at once. By completing this application, you will be considered (if you are eligible) for the following writing prizes from the Department of History:

• William F. Allen Prize ($200)
• American Indian History Prize ($500)
• Baensch Prize ($500)
• Andrew Bergman Prize ($1,250 and $750)
• William A. Brown Writing Prize for Black History ($500)
• Civil Resistance Writing Prize ($500)
• Curti Prize ($200)
• John DeNovo Prize ($500)
• Digital & Public History Prize ($500)
• Paul Glad Prize ($500)
• Fred Harvey Harrington Prize ($500)
• LGBTQ+ History Prize ($500)
• David McDonald Writing Prize ($500)
• Paul J. Schrag Prize ($200)
• Alfred Erich Senn Prize ($1,000)

Awards range in the amount of $200 to $1,250. Your application will be considered for specific prizes based on your answers to the questions in this application, eligibility factors, and the materials provided. Please note that one other History writing prize, the $1,000 Farha Tahir Award in African History, requires a separate WiSH application for consideration.

Eligibility Criteria
We are only able to consider submissions created for a UW-Madison course within the previous year (spring 2023, summer 2023, and fall 2023). Papers or projects created for a high school history class or a course taken at another institution are not eligible.
