Roberto G. Sánchez Scholarship
The Roberto G. Sánchez Scholarship provides up to $10,000 and is a renewable scholarship. There is a strong preference to award this scholarship to new transfer students who have completed two years at a two year college system. There is also a preference for current or former Sánchez scholars from Madison College or MMSD.
Professor Sánchez wished to assist undergraduate students on the basis of financial need who plan to enroll as transfer students from Madison Area Technical College (MATC), other post secondary institutions and/or as freshmen at UW-Madison. The Roberto G.Sánchez Scholarship Fund shall give preference to bilingual, first-generation students. It is also strongly preferred that assistance be given to new transfer students who have already successfully completed two years of post-secondary education.
Completed applications are evaluated using donor criteria and College of Letters & Science criteria (academic excellence, community service, leadership, diversity, strength of character, and creative accomplishment). Successful applicants should also have strong recommendations and well written essays.
Professor Sánchez taught at UW-Madison and retired after a long and successful career in education. When Professor Sánchez retired he sought ways to honor both his parent’s belief in the power of education as well as his Hispanic heritage. He created scholarship funds at Madison area high schools and at Madison College. As a child, Professor Sánchez learned to read and write Spanish at home, and later in English when he went to school. The emphasis his parents placed on the importance of schooling inspired him throughout his life, enabling him to achieve his doctorate degree. Professor Sánchez died in August of 2016.
