Helen Patternson Hyde Journalism Fund
The Helen Patternson Hyde Journalism Fund supports undergraduate students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Ms. Hyde was a professor of journalism at the University from 1923-1958 and was involved in the early years of what is now known as the office of University Communications.
FAFSA required prior to awarding decisions. Preference in selection is given to journalism students with financial need.
About the process: Students do not apply for individual scholarships with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Students fill out one application and the scholarship committee matches students to awards. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academics, study area and involvement. Hyde served as a member of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty for 33 years. During her tenure at Wisconsin she wrote two journalism textbooks, one on publicity for organizations and the other on feature writing. Her feature-writing book, published in 1939 with 10 re-printings, was used by most journalism schools in the United States, Africa, Australia, Great Britain and South America. In 1945, Hyde received the Association for Women in Communication’s Headliner Award to recognize her outstanding achievements.
