Phyto Colorant Scholarship

Jean A. Goldman graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1955 with a degree in social work. Growing up in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, she learned about gardening and cooking from her mother, and these two pursuits became lifelong passions. She became expert at both. This scholarship honors her skill in those arts, but also her unwavering positivism and her embrace of life and family. Jean and her husband Ted live in Skokie, Illinois and make frequent trips to Madison. Hermann von Elbe (1900 – 1991) was born in Germany, and grew up in a small town on the banks of the Rhine River. After high school, he earned an M.S. Degree in Agriculture. After two internships, he managed and operated a farm, owned by his father in law, in Pommerania near the Baltic Sea. After World War II the farm was seized by the Russian occupational forces. This event set in motion immigration proceedings to America. He entered America in 1950. He managed for three years a farm near Elgin, Il and later managed for several years the Wrigley farm in Lake Geneva, WI. When Wrigley farm operations were closed, he moved to Madison, WI and worked for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation taking care or research animals until his retirement.
