Otto & Gaylord Hill Family Dairy Science Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by Gail Hill and her husband, Jim Brown, in memory of Otto and Gaylord Hill, Gail’s grandfather and father respectively. Gail received a BSE in French from UW-Madison in 1971 and she and her husband live in Kent, Washington. Having attended the University of Wisconsin Short Course in the early 1900s, Otto Hill became aware of the most modern advances in farming techniques and embraced the idea of using science to improve the ability to produce food in an efficient manner. Otto and Gaylord were pioneers in fertilization using nitrate and phosphate, after soil testing, to increase productivity. They tested the cows for butterfat and kept records on each animal. They showed cattle at the county and state fairs and developed a reputation for production and type, allowing them to sell bull calves at a premium to other farmers as herd sires. Gail shared this thought about her grandfather and father: “They will never be “famous,” but their contributions to a better life for farmers and consumers are significant. We give this scholarship to honor their memory.”
