Russell R. Bonfiglio Memorial Scholarship

The Russell R. Bonfiglio Memorial Scholarship was established in 1977 through contributions from the family and friends of the Bonfiglio family, as well as from professional organizations and colleagues in the community, in memory of Russell R. Bonfiglio.

This scholarship was established in memory of an individual who exhibited a great deal of consistency and dedication to his academic career, community, and mankind. It has been established for the benefit of future students aspiring to pursue similar goals. The essence of the scholarship is to assist a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who has been accepted into the University of Wisconsin Law School, with his/her tuition expenses for the first year in law school.

The Bonfiglio family truly believes that Russell R. Bonfiglio had the potential to make significant contributions to our society. The tragic accident that took his life has actually taken a great deal more from us by depriving our society of the untapped potential that was evident in this man. Our objectives are based on the idea that if some other promising student can fulfill his/her goal by attending the University of Wisconsin Law School, and upon graduation make significant contributions to the enrichment of mankind, then our efforts and your patronage will have been given to a most-deserving endeavor — assisting in the progress of our society.

Russell graduated from Shorewood High School in 1972. He then attended UWM from which he graduated, with honors, in 1976. While at UWM, his academic performance was outstanding, thus warranting his receipt of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa award. In addition, his college years were supplemented with service to his fellow students and community performed through his work as the Associate Director of the University Legal Clinic at UWM. As a student, Russell made numerous contributions to the Department of Political Science. His research was used in actual publications of the department. Russell was accepted to the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1976. He continued his academic success in law school by completing his first semester as one of the highest ranked students. Throughout these achievements, he maintained his character, personal integrity, and concern for others. This scholarship in Russell’s memory is an everlasting recognition of these achievements and qualities.
