Michael Harrington McKinney Scholarship Fund

This fund was created by Michael’s mother, Barbara H. McKinney, to honor her son who passed away in 2006. Michael strived to be a positive role model and used his position as a news media personality to raise community consciousness on critical social issues and inspired the community to act.

Eligibility Criteria
Only School of Journalism and Mass Communication majors are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The application to apply for this and all other School of Journalism and Mass Communication scholarships is open the first two weeks of every December. Please visit our website for additional information on how to apply. Preference in selection is given to minority students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication with a strong interest in journalism or broadcast journalism. The recipient should have some demonstrated financial need and be involved in community service activities on campus and/or in the community. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student, be in good academic standing with at least a B average (3.0 to 4.0 scale).


Donor Information
Michael Harrington McKinney was a NBC-15 Madison anchor and reporter for many years. As a journalist he was honored with a number of awards from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, the Associated Press and YWCA Racial Justice Award. He was also voted several times a Madison’s Best TV Personality but e readers of the Wisconsin state Journal, Isthmus, Madison Magazine and Wisconsin Woman Magazine, and he was named the Jaycees Young Wisconsinite.
