Theodore Herfurth Freshmen Scholarship Fund

The Theodore Herfurth scholarship provides a 4 year award to high achieving students with financial need pursuing a degree from the College of Letters & Science. Typically the award is $8,000 per year for 4 years. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA; be enrolled full-time; and intend to graduate with an L&S degree.

Incoming freshmen are considered for the award using the content of the admissions application and the FAFSA. In addition Letters & Science values academic excellence, community service, leadership, diversity, strength of character, and creative accomplishment.

Theodore Herfurth Jr. established this scholarship to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students in the College of Letters & Science. Mr. Herfurth was a prominent Madison business and civic leader and is credited for determining the author of the famous “sifting and winnowing” phrase inscribed on Bascom Hall.
