Holstrom Environmental Research Fellowship

The Holstrom Environmental Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff.


Eligibility Criteria
A campus-wide scholarship to support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty or staff.
Research proposals must have an environmental focus, and applicants must have at least a junior standing at time of application. Apply spring semester to fund work on the project during the summer or following academic year.


How to Apply
Application includes 5-page project proposal, letter of recommendation and transcript.


Selection Criteria
Selection Criteria: Evidence of the student’s intellectual contribution to the research (may include, but is not limited to, student’s contribution of preliminary data to the proposed project); significance of the research (originality, impact on the field); degree of meaningful collaboration with a faculty research mentor; extent to which research objective is achievable within the proposed timeline (may also include evaluation of the student’s academic record).

Award Information
The student researcher recieves a stipend, and the faculty/staff research advisor also receives a stipend for costs associated with the research (e.g., supplies, faculty or student travel related to the project). If projects have more than one student or one faculty member together, the stipend levels will vary. Up to five Holstrom Scholarships are given each year.


Conditions of Award
Award recipients must register for three credits of supervised research, senior thesis or directed study during the summer or academic year following the receipt of the award in May. This must be done prior to graduation. The recipients must also have proposals approved by the Human Subjects and/or Animal Care and Use Committee(s) if they propose to use human or animal subjects. The recipients must also present findings at the Undergraduate Symposium and submit a research report of approximately 500 to 1,000 words upon completion of research. Up to five applicants are awarded the Holstrom each year.
