Norman F. Olson Cheese Research Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1996 by The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association in honor of Dr. Norman F. Olson. Norman was born in 1931 in Edmund, Wisconsin. He received his B.S. in Food Sciences, M.S. in Dairy and Food Industry and PhD in Dairy and Food Industry from UW-Madison in 1953, 1957 and 1959 respectively. During his forty years of service in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Norman earned the respect and admiration of his peers, students and the entire dairy industry. Instrumental in organizing the first (and the largest) Center for Dairy Research in the country, Norman also served as its first Director. In addition, he taught classes from 1959-1997 and was the Director of the Cheese Research Institute from 1979-1993. His research focused around the chemistry, microbiology and technology of cheese products and acceleration of cheese ripening. His reputation extends beyond the University – throughout the United States and around the world.

Eligibility Criteria
Awarded to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Food Science with an interest in Cheese Research. The Department of Food Science nominates students for this award.
