Mary Shine Peterson Undergraduate Award

This prestigious undergraduate award is designed to recognize UW-Madison Biochemistry undergraduate students with demonstrated excellence in and commitment to research by providing financial assistance to foster and support their experience in biochemistry-relevant activities during the summer session before their senior year and/or during their senior year.
Relevant activities for support include: 1) conducting faculty-advised research in a biochemistry-oriented laboratory on campus or overseas, 2) traveling overseas to participate in a global health program, and/or 3) traveling to a scientific meeting to present a research-oriented poster or paper.

Conditions of Award
Applicants must be a declared biochemistry major; for applications submitted during the 2021-2022 school year students must intend to graduate in December 2022, May 2023, or August 2023; must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 after the end of the fall 2021 semester; must have completed at least one biochemistry course at the level of 500 or higher. NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants with at least one year of laboratory research experience.

Prior to graduation, awardees are required to submit a written report (500 to 1,000 words); the report must be approved by the student’s research or program supervisor. The report must describe how the Peterson Award enhanced and fostered the student’s training in the field of biochemistry. The report deadline is the last day of classes in which the student is enrolled at UW-Madison.

  2. Letters of Recommendation
    • Please submit the name and email address of a second person from whom you are requesting a letter of recommendation. Letters of Recommendation must be received no later than February 7.
    • Please submit the name and email address of the faculty mentor supervising your project in order to request a letter of recommendation from them. Faculty Letters of Recommendation must be received no later than February 7.
  3. Please upload one bookmarked PDF which contains the following items in this order: 1. A cover page containing the following: • your name • year of study in your undergraduate career • GPA • expected graduation date • name and department of your faculty research advisor • List of lab experiences with dates and other notable extra-curricular activities, including participation in international programs 2. A current resume or curriculum vita (CV). For help with your resume/CV, please visit your school or college's career services office. 3. A personal statement describing your professional career plans, the activity or research project the award is intended to support, and how the award would enhance and advance your research education in biochemistry and scientific career. Your personal statement should be one page, 11-point font or larger, 0.8 inch margins. 4. A copy of your transcripts/grade reports (unofficial is fine) for any college coursework completed or in-progress that is not UW-Madison coursework. 5. Copies of any co-authored papers, if applicable.
