William F. Vilas Merit Scholarship

The William F. Vilas Merit Scholarship are supported through the annual generous support of the William F. Vilas Trust Estate. The Vilas Scholarship is one of the highest honors UW-Madison bestows upon its students and is only awarded to the highest academic achieving undergraduate students.

Donor Information
William Freeman Vilas graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1858. After volunteering to serve during the Civil War, Mr. Vilas became a law professor and regent at UW-Madison, a Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, U.S. Post Master General, Secretary of the Interior, and U.S. Senator. A prominent lawyer in the Madison community, Mr. Vilas endowed this scholarship believing that education was essential to creating good citizens, combatting prejudice, and promoting personal success. The William F. Vilas Trust Estate has generously supported these undergraduate scholarships for more than half a century.

Selection Criteria
1. Entering students selected for this scholarship based upon the highest academic achievement as evidenced in their admission application
2. Seniors are selected for this scholarship based on the highest levels of academic achievement while attending UW-Madison
