Richard Ralph Winter Phoenix Rising Humanitarian Scholarship

The Richard Ralph Winter Phoenix Rising Humanitarian scholarship provides a one-time award recognizing humanitarian achievement and service, encouraging excellence and commitment in the application of humanitarian ideals, and affirming the moral obligation to provide for human welfare.

Eligible recipients must be second or third year College of Letters & Science students with a strong record of community/humanitarian service. The ideal scholarship candidate should exhibit a natural desire to provide for human welfare and a rational compassion for others. Further consideration will be given if the candidate has overcome life or academic challenges and/or has financial need. Completion of FAFSA is recommended. Finally, the recipient should possess the innate qualities of dignity, courage and discipline.

The successful applicant will also have strong recommendation and well written essays. Students must be in and maintain good standing and full-time enrollment in the College of Letters & Science.

This scholarship is made available by the generosity of Charles Manthey Winter and the Richard Ralph Winter Rising Phoenix Humanitarian Scholarship.

  1. What is your expected graduation date (Semester/Year)? You must have Junior or Senior standing in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2020 semesters to be eligible for this award. You must be planning to enroll full-time (12 or more credits) in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2020 semesters.
  2. Finalists considered for this award will be invited to a required short interview in March with a small committee. I understand that if I am chosen as a finalist I am required to attend an interview.
  3. If selected as the recipient of this award, I understand that I will be given the opportunity to revise and edit my essay for submission to the donor. Prompt follow through is imperative.
  4. This essay will need to stand on its own as a complete piece of writing. I understand that it is recommeded that I use the resources available at the Writing Center.
  5. Discuss an experience in which you showed courage to address or meet a challenge.
