Only School of Journalism and Mass Communication majors are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The application to apply for this and all other School of Journalism and Mass Communication scholarships is open the first two weeks of every December. Please visit our website for additional information on how to apply. Preference in selection is given to an upper-level, out-of-state student on the strategic communications track, preferably public relations. Further, the donor prefers that the award be based upon academic merit and financial need.
George Hamel Sr., a 1966 alumnus of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, took a leave of absence from the U.S. Army and, at the age of 44, earned a Master’s degree in public relations. After graduation, Hamel was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs at the Pentagon, where he spent the duration of his military career.
