Bernice D. Kuney Scholarship

The Bernice D. Kuney Scholarship was established in 1989 with a gift from Edith Martindale to honor her mentor, Bernice Kuney. Ms. Kuney taught English for forty years at UW Extension, serving adults returning to college for degree work or professional development. Ms. Martindale, class of 1944, devoted her professional life to a better understanding and response to mental illness and mental disability through her work and writings.

This scholarship supports returning adult students who have had a significant gap in their education and are enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree program. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Gap of at least 5 years
  • Preference for student studying part time
  • Academic progress, achievement, and commitment
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, asylee, or eligible non-citizen
