Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Truman foundation provides $30,000 for graduate study to college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to “making a difference” through public service in government, education, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors.


Eligibility Criteria
National scholarship for juniors, providing $30,000 for graduate study in preparation for a career in public service.
Apply as a junior (one year of undergraduate study remaining after the application year). Must be a U.S. citizen/national, with a GPA of 3.5 or above. Strong applicants have an extensive record of service, activism and leadership.


How to Apply
Candidates must be nominated by UW-Madison to compete nationally. To be considered for nomination, submit all application materials to the UAA Office by the campus deadline. UW-Madison may nominate 4 students/yr to compete nationally for 60-65 scholarships.


Selection Criteria
Selection criteria: service and leadership record, academic achievement, writing and analytical skills, suitability of proposed program of study for a career in public service.


Award Information
Public service is defined as government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service- oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment.


Conditions of Award
As a condition of receiving Truman funds, scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of their graduate degree program.
