Marshall Scholarship
Established in 1953, the Marshall Scholarship Program gives high ability young Americans the opportunity to study at any university in the United Kingdom. The Program was created to honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan, and foster appreciation of the U.K. among future American leaders.
Eligibility Criteria
National scholarship funding 2-3 years of graduate study at any university in the UK for top students in every field.
Apply as a senior or up to two years after graduating. Must be a U.S. citizen with an undergraduate GPA of 3.7 or above, and attain a bachelor’s degree before the scholarship begins; may not hold a degree or degree equivalent from a British university. Strong applicants combine academic distinction with a record of service and leadership, 4-8 strong letters of recommendation, and a good rationale for study in the UK.
How to Apply
Candidates must be nominated by UW-Madison to compete nationally. To be considered for nomination, submit all application materials to the UAA Office by the campus deadline.
Selection Criteria
Selection criteria: distinction of intellect (scholastic attainments), distinction of character (leadership, service), the potential to make a significant contribution to society, motivation and seriousness of purpose, and presentation of a specific and realistic academic program of study in the UK.
Award Information
The Scholarship covers tuition and fees, airfare, living expenses, and related expenses such as books, for two years of study in any discipline leading to a graduate degree at a British university. (The Marshall Commission does not fund second BA degrees or MBA degrees.) Third-year extensions are granted by the Commission on a limited basis. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded each year.
