Freiburg Madison Sister City Scholarship

Madison, Wisconsin and Freiburg, Germany have a sister city relationship which fosters cultural exchanges and activities between the two communities. The Freiburg Madison Sister City Scholarship is established and sponsored by the City of Freiburg, in cooperation with the Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee (MFSCC) and Freiburg-Madison-Gesellschaft (FMG), and is intended to promote sister city relations between Madison and Freiburg. Eligibility Criteria
Pending the yearly approval of funds, this competitive scholarship will be awarded to 1-2 students on the Academic Year in Freiburg (AYF) program administered by UW Study Abroad program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The following eligibility criteria apply:
  1. In order to be considered for Freiburg Madison Sister City Scholarship for this application round, an applicant must have completed their program application by the priority deadline of December 7, 2018. If awarded a scholarship, the student must be a participant in the Academic Year in Freiburg (AYF) program for the academic year 2019-20.

  2. Be a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison or Edgewood College.

Application is open NOW! The deadline is JUNE 6, 2019. Incomplete scholarship applications or applications submitted to the office will not be considered. Selection Criteria
Essay required.
Special consideration will be given to applicants who possess the following characteristics and/or traits:
  • From the Madison area
  • First time abroad
  • Honors
  • Financial need
  • First-generation college student

UW Study Abroad takes into consideration other awards a student may have been offered.


Award Information
The award is 300 euros per month from September 2019 through August 2020. Please note that the Freiburg Madison Sister City Scholarship cannot be held at the same time as the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship or the Baden-Württemberg Stipendium. These scholarships are mutually exclusive. Recipients of more than one of these scholarships must choose which scholarship to accept and inform IAP of the decision as soon as possible.


Conditions of Award
Student must be a participant in the Academic Year in Freiburg (AYF) program. Completion of the study abroad program is a requirement of the scholarship. In addition, recipients are required to submit a thank-you letter for the donor. Recipients of this award are required to participate in events and activities during and after the study abroad experience to further foster the collaboration between Freiburg & Madison. Specifically, you will attend at least one FMG event in Freiburg during your time abroad. AYF staff will provide you with information regarding FMG events. Upon your return, you will be asked to share your experience with the MFSCC by either attending the annual MFSCC dinner or another MFSCC event. In addition, you will work with your IAP Study Abroad Advisor to share your experience with other UW-Madison students via an outreach event on-campus.
