Thomas P. Carpenter Fellowship

Tom Carpenter was a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He held a deep commitment to mathematics, to teachers, to children, and to supporting the development of the field of mathematics education. In 2004 he received the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions in the field of math education at a national level.

Tom was especially known for his role in developing Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), an approach to mathematics instruction based on how children intuitively think about mathematical concepts. CGI began as a research project and over the past 30 years has grown into an approach that has transformed the teaching of tens of thousands of teachers and impacted hundreds of thousands of children.

Outside of teaching, Tom enjoyed biking, skiing, and spending time at his family’s lake home in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Tom and his wife, Sally traveled extensively through Colorado and Europe searching for great skiing and dining.
