Alma Baron Second Chance for Women

The Alma Baron Second Chance for Women Scholarship was established in 2001 by Alma Baron, who returned to college at age 51 to earn a doctorate in adult education. This award supports women age 45+ who are returning to complete their degrees. After Alma’s passing in 2006, friends and family, especially her daughters, Dr. Jill Baron and Professor Ellen Jo Baron, have continued to honor her legacy through ongoing support.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Female, age 45 or older
  2. Recently admitted or continuing UW–Madison degree-seeking student in good academic standing
  3. Demonstrated financial need (FAFSA required prior to awarding
  4. U.S. citizen, permanent resident, asylee, or other eligible non-citizen
  5. Strong potential for academic success based on career or non-career experience within the past five years.

Conditions of Award
Recipients must enroll in at least six credits across the two semesters of the award year (e.g., 3 credits/semester).

The application for this award is to be submitted through the ‘Scholarships for Nontraditional, Adult, & Single Parent Students’ opportunity. There are up to 14 individual scholarships associated with this one application, administered by the Division of Continuing Studies.
