The Charles Manthey Winter Philosophy Scholarship
The Charles Manthey Winter Philosophy Scholarship will lend financial support to one student majoring in Philosophy.
How to Apply
Applicants must complete a well-written 1-2 page essay describing the significance of their UW-Madison Philosophy education. A call for applications will be made each year near the end of the fall term with application materials due in late January.
Winners will be honored at our department annual celebration of graduate and award winners banquet in mid-May.
The award will be distributed the following fall term. Questions regarding the scholarship application process should be directed to: frontoffice@philosophy.wisc.edu.
Conditions of Award
Eligible applicants must be Philosophy majors who have maintained at least 3.5 GPA for the past two terms. An aptitude for the study of philosophy and a desire for philosophical knowledge are of primary importance while financial need is of secondary importance. Graduating seniors are NOT eligible for this scholarship award.
The following written material is required as part of the scholarship application:
- The 1-2 page essay.
- A Philosophy Department recommendation.
- A copy of the applicant’s academic transcript.
- A statement describing the applicant’s financial status.

The minimum value of the annual scholarship award is $3,000; the actual value of the award will be provided in the call for applications. The Scholarship award recipient and parents will be invited to the Philosophy Department’s annual Honors and Awards reception.
