John Huppler and Elizabeth Ebbott Huppler
John Huppler ‘39 and Elizabeth Huppler ’39 created this scholarship. Elizabeth was born in Edgerton, WI on January 24, 1917. She always liked the out-of-doors and adventure. When she went to UW, her job was waiting on tables in Chadbourne and she studied Engineering. She was on the Women’s bowling team, Dolphin Club, the YWCA cabinet, and treasurer of the dorm. Elizabeth purposely dated others besides her classmates, until Ray Owens gave an ice-skating Christmas party in December 1937. She hadn’t known John Huppler until he asked Elizabeth if she had tried skate-sailing and if she’d like to try it. The sail is a huge kite which one holds and turns, catching the wind. John held it and Elizabeth held on to John. They talked a little and discovered they liked all the same things. they were married September 10, 1938 and lived in a one-room apartment on Sterling Court, near where the Elvehem/Chazen Museum was. John and Elizabeth had all their classes together. My father paid our rent, John had a job at the Keyroom (Surveying) with small salary. They sent our laundry to John’s mother in Muscoda, WI, and his father sent them food packages from his meat market and grocery store. It was a tight squeeze but they made it. John and Elizabeth went to 70 countries as well as thru all the United States, all the provinces of Canada and much of Mexico. They were bird watchers, environmentalists and campers as well. They enjoyed a great life and they hope you have the same.
