Gary Klein

UW–Madison was the catalyst for a lifelong commitment to intellectual inquiry for Gary Klein. A graduate of the Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) program and a Philosophy major, Gary also pursued graduate studies in Buddhist Studies. He credits the university with not only opening his mind to a world of stimulating ideas but also providing him with the critical tools to challenge and analyze them.

Gary’s worldview remains deeply shaped by the university’s dedication to “sifting and winnowing” in the pursuit of truth. To honor his sister, Janeen—who dedicated her life to guiding young children—he established the Janeen Henning Family Teacher Education Fund. This gift supports future educators in the School of Education, helping them carry forward Janeen’s legacy of mentorship.

In these uncertain times, Gary encourages all students to follow the advice of the poet Horace: Sapere Aude—"Dare to know."
